What is Luna Lisa Alpha? The unreleased GPT Image checkpoint

luna-lisa-alpha was flagged on LMArena after mona-lisa-1. Here is what public reporting actually supports — and what is still rumor — before OpenAI ships anything.

Luna Lisa Alpha (luna-lisa-alpha) is the community name for an unreleased image model that a tracker reported on LMArena. A widely shared post put three claims next to each other:

  1. A new, unreleased GPT Image-class model may have surfaced on Arena.
  2. The tracker’s name for it was luna-lisa-alpha.
  3. The previous GPT Image checkpoint in that telling was mona-lisa-1, while OpenAI had reportedly been A/B testing GPT Image models for a month or two.

None of those sentences is an OpenAI product announcement. This page separates what can be sourced from public Arena reporting from what is still inference.

The Lisa naming pattern

mona-lisa-1 appeared in Arena image battles around 9 August 2026. Early testers described a modest gain in realism versus GPT Image 2, not a dramatic leap. Some people said untouched Arena downloads triggered OpenAI’s public provenance tools (SynthID / C2PA associated with OpenAI export). That is a useful clue. It is still not a model card.

luna-lisa-alpha reads as the next alias in the same series: another Lisa, an alpha suffix, no provider label. Arena exists so labs can collect preference data without shipping a name. Google did this with Nano Banana. OpenAI did this in April 2026 with tape-themed aliases before GPT Image 2.

How this sits next to GPT Image 2

OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.0 on 21 April 2026, after maskingtape-alpha, gaffertape-alpha, and packingtape-alpha leaked on Arena earlier that month. GPT Image 2 is the current public system: stronger instruction following, in-image text, world knowledge, and photorealism than GPT Image 1.5. It is also the model this site calls in production.

If Luna Lisa Alpha is real, the bar is not “prettier demo stills.” It has to beat an incumbent that already leads public text-to-image tables on prompt adherence, edit consistency, and cost.

What you can do on lunalisaimage.com

Until a public luna-lisa-alpha API exists:

  • Generate stills with GPT Image 2 text-to-image.
  • Edit uploads with GPT Image 2 image-to-image (up to 16 references).
  • Join the waitlist for the day a callable Alpha checkpoint is wired in.
