What is Luna Lisa Alpha?
Luna Lisa Alpha is the community name for an unreleased image model reported on LMArena. A public post noted that a tracker saw “luna-lisa-alpha”, that the previous GPT Image checkpoint was “mona-lisa-1”, and that OpenAI has been A/B testing image models for a month or two. None of that is an official model card.
A Lisa-series Arena alias
mona-lisa-1 appeared in Arena image battles around 9 August 2026. luna-lisa-alpha reads as the next checkpoint in that naming pattern, not a shipping product name.
GPT Image 2 is the public model
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images 2.0 on 21 April 2026 after tape-themed Arena tests. It still leads public image arenas. Luna Lisa Alpha, if real, would be evaluated against that bar.
Provenance is still unconfirmed
Some testers said mona-lisa-1 outputs triggered OpenAI Verify / SynthID signals. That is meaningful and still not a press release. Treat luna-lisa-alpha the same way: watch, do not ship assumptions.

Tape-alpha models hit Arena
In early April 2026, maskingtape-alpha, gaffertape-alpha, and packingtape-alpha appeared in LMArena image tests and were pulled within hours. Testers reported cleaner in-scene text, less of the old warm yellow cast, and stronger world knowledge.
2026-04-21
GPT Image 2 becomes public
OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.0 on 21 April 2026: instruction following, text rendering, world knowledge, and realism. It later sat at the top of published Arena text-to-image tables. That is the model this studio calls in production.

mona-lisa-1 surfaces
Around 9 August 2026 an anonymous generator named mona-lisa-1 showed up in Arena battles. Community posts tied it to OpenAI because of output feel and, in some reports, OpenAI provenance checks. It did not appear as a public API id.

A tracker then picked up luna-lisa-alpha. The previous GPT Image checkpoint in that telling was mona-lisa-1, while OpenAI had reportedly been A/B testing image models. Until OpenAI names it, this site treats Alpha as a watch item and ships GPT Image 2 instead.
